With use of the natural
environment comes a responsibility to protect and safeguard
sensitive areas. As a life member of Mourne Heritage Trust,
Outdoor Ireland North is aware of the need to conserve
the quality of the landscape for future generations and
local community life.
Based in the Kingdom of
Down, the Mourne Mountains are on our doorstep; An unspoiled
mountain range designated an area of outstanding natural
beauty. Further north, Fair Head and the Giants Causeway
offer stunning coastal cliff scenery and to the south
the Cooley Mountains with the medieval town of Carlingford
at their base.
Visitors on holiday in
the North of Ireland will not be disappointed with the
unspoiled rural scenery of hill and coast. There are numerous
rural roads to explore by bike and hidden heritage sites
to visit on route. Check the event
guide for current information.
"The trip to
the Mournes was really fantastic and I hope that I will
return again" - Andreas
"Just
a short note to thank you for your lovely company when
we walked in the Mournes. I love the mountains, as you
know, and its great to be with somebody that shares my
passion. " John
Your Guide
Loretto, a former university
college lecturer, is a Blue Badge
Tourist Guide and a qualified mountain leader with
extensive experience of leading hikes in mountain environments
and taking group cycling rides on country back roads.
She loves to explore and has travelled worldwide, trekking
in the Peruvian Andes, tramping in the wilderness area
of New Zealand, hiking in the Rocky Mountains of North
America and Canada, trekking to the base camps of Everest
and K2 in the Himalayas, numerous hiking trips to different
mountain ranges of Europe and of course all the mountain
areas of Ireland.
Having a love for mountain
and coastal scenery, overseas cycling trips have almost
always been to islands and coastal regions. The first
tour around the outer Hebrides of Scotland was followed
by trips to the Norwegian Fiords, Corsica, Greece, Crete,
Shetland and Orkney islands, New Zealand, France, Czech
Republic, Slovakia and Poland and the most recent, a short
break to the west of Ireland.
With a background in 0utdoor
Education Loretto takes a keen interest in environmental
issues keeping up to date through membership of the Mountaineering
Council of Ireland, Mourne Heritage Trust and Lecale Historical
Society. Ornithology is a hobby and binoculars are an
essential piece of equipment for all outings.
